Mainstreaming remotely sensed ecosystem functioning in ecological niche models

چکیده

Biodiversity is declining globally at unprecedented rates. Ecological niche models (ENMs) are one of the most widely used toolsets to appraise global change impacts on biodiversity. Here, we identify a variety advantages incorporating remotely sensed ecosystem functioning attributes (EFAs) into ENMs. The development ENMs that explicitly incorporate will allow more holistic and integrative perspective habitat dynamics. synergies between increasingly available open-access satellite images cloud-based platforms for planetary-scale geospatial analysis offer an opportunity processes disturbances (such as fires, insect outbreaks or droughts) have been so far largely neglected in ecological characterization modelling. paradigmatic example EFAs application time series spectral vegetation indices related primary productivity carbon cycle. surface energy balance water cycles derived from remote sensing products such land temperature soil moisture enable fine-scale species' niche—eventually improving predictive performance All these confirm new generation based would great perspectives increase our ability monitor suitability trends population However, despite technical advances increasing effort community develop EFAs, yet make full profit recent developments by integrating them A coordinated agenda experts modellers be essential over coming years bridge gap ecology disciplines take (and timely) advantage fast-growing body Earth observation data technologies—with special emphasis testing variables key driving functioning.

High Spatial Resolution Remotely Sensed Data for Ecosystem Characterization

R sensed data have been employed for the characterization of ecologically important variables from local through global contexts. These data may be used to generate a wide range of estimates that are valuable to ecologists, including information on land cover, vegetation cover, habitat, forest structure, and forest function (Kerr and Ostrovsky 2003), and to track changes in these variables. Rec...

Comparative analysis of remotely-sensed data products via ecological niche modeling of avian influenza case occurrences in Middle Eastern poultry

BACKGROUND Ecological niche modeling integrates known sites of occurrence of species or phenomena with data on environmental variation across landscapes to infer environmental spaces potentially inhabited (i.e., the ecological niche) to generate predictive maps of potential distributions in geographic space. Key inputs to this process include raster data layers characterizing spatial variation ...

Developing Theoretical Marine Habitat Suitability Models from Remotely-Sensed Data and Traditional Ecological Knowledge

There is a lack of information regarding critical habitats for many marine species, including the bearded seal, an important subsistence species for the indigenous residents of Arctic regions. A systematic approach to modeling marine mammal habitat in arctic regions using the lifetime and multi-generational Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) of Alaska Native hunters is developed to address ...

Coupling Models and Data: which possibilities for remotely-sensed images?

The international scientific context is pointing out the role that can be played by models and observation systems for the evaluation and forecasting of the risks related to environmental problems. In this context, coupling data and models becomes a scientific challenge regarding the following considerations: A numerical model without observation data is not really interesting; On the other han...
